Colorado’s pet stores consistently tell customers that their puppies come from responsible breeders. The truth is that they purchase puppies largely from out-of-state commercial puppy breeders and brokers. Through open access to State of Colorado import documents (available through Colorado Veterinary Inspection reports), Colorado Citizens for Canine Welfare has discovered that between 2017 and 2020, 93.7% came from breeders who violated the standards set by USDA. That represented a total of 30,747 puppies!
